Section 8 has done more harm then good. Their moving into the suburbs and bringing their problems/ways with them. Crime has increased. Their are 10-20 people living in one house. The streets which are for cars are their childrens play ground. They park many cars in the driveways, on the grass, and the cars clutter the streets. There is paper and bottles thrown every where. America is starting to look like a third world country. When President Obama made changes to section 8, he did not make changes that would allow them to move into his neighborhood. It takes hard work and endurance to obtain a certain life style. Should I be punished because I work, and take care of my home? Just so you know I'm black. I have had a lot of hungry and sleepless nights. I'm a child of a mother who was on welfare. This is a system that stinks, and where middle class people are punished. If you want a better life, make the right decisions, do the right things. Stop getting all these handouts! I'm talking to Mexican's, Black's, White's, and others, because they all take advantage of the system. The flood gates have been open for crime in my neighborhood. Shame on President Obama!.By the way I live in Humble. ... more

I see this is an old post, but for anyone else reading it, I have some opinions to share. Everything in life is mindset. If you expect Spanish to be a barrier, it will be. However, I was born and raised here and though I am not proud to say it, I still don't know it hardly at all (I can't converse in it!) because I almost never have to speak it. You will be fine. I actually want to learn it better. It's the perfect opportunity, where else can you go and try to converse in a different language and go back to your native language when you get in over your head. LOL

Regarding safety. I just moved from back from a long stint in Indiana and there were parts of Indianapolis (where I spent many years) that I felt more threatened than any places I have visited here in El Paso.

In summary, I am certain that you will find El Paso quite welcoming. There are many people from many places due to the base. There is a lot of wonderful food and culture here. It's not like any other place.

This is interesting, and disappointing. My husband & I are retired looking for a small home to rent in Brenham. Our granddaughter & grandson-in-law are buying a home there and we so much want to be near our two great-grandbabies. I realize Brenham is a small town and rentals may not be abundant, so when I found this cute little house for rent I was sooo excited. This home we're looking for will be our last. And yes...we are in the same boat as too many Americans: Trying to live on a fixed income that our Congress thinks belongs to them. Under any other circumstances taking money from a trust account that you have no legal right to would be a crime. Oh Lord...don't get me started. LOL!

Anyway, for some reason...maybe desperation...when I first read the rental ad it said $750. Exactly the amount we were trying to stay at. I couldn't believe it! I quickly went to Google Earth, put in the address and swooped down to look all around the neighborhood. It just kept getting better...the other homes were about the same size and seemed to be maintained and looking neat & clean.

WOW!! We have been looking non-stop for 2 months, and there it is right in front of me on Google Earth. I reached over to grab the mouse to go back and find the phone number to call and get this ball rolling. I had to take one more quick look at the Google image of "MY" house...that's when I saw it. How could I have missed it? I went back to the ad looking for some reference to what I'd just seen. Nothing. I went back to Google Earth. Yep...it's still there. Directly across the street from this really cute little house were railroad tracks. But I still didn't give up. I went back to the ad to get the ph# so I could call the owner of the house to ask if these tracks were still used. That's when I stumbled across these messages, and it appears those tracks are VERY active. Then to add insult to injury I see that the rent amount isn't $750, as I thought it read...IT'S $950. HOLY SMOKES! So much for my happy Friday morning...{*_*}

Hi, excellent question. We live very close to the Gordon/7R Ranch area. We don't lock our doors, never have seen the need. Very low crime, if any... ever. Hope this helps. Our informal neighborhood watch group is basically all the neighbors on the street know when there is a vehicle lurking around that doesn't belong. Plus since 7R is a gated community, this is an even more secure environment. Hope this helps! Call me if you'd like to view any of the homes at 7R ranch. I can help :)
