Try a scoot rental, car share, or heaven forbid - a bus.

It's a very quiet, clean, low crime part of SF.
There are beautiful views, and many local cafes and restaurants just a few blocks away. I like the village feel of the neighborhood where you get to know your neighbors, have your favorite cafe-barista, hair salon, and be a regular. Washington Park is a nice place to picnic, hang out, walk your dog, or jog around. There's also a great clean swimming pool with sauna where you can do laps, classes, and outside there are new public tennis courts. ... more

You've gotten some good input from the others below. However, there are a lot of great neighborhoods in the city and you may want to look at some others depending upon your lifestyle and work requirements. If you don't know the city well and are thinking about buying, I think it's a good idea to rent first to make sure this is the area you really want to live, then explore while renting to see if any other area(s) fits your life better.
