Hello again Meg,

The reason, as I understand it, that vinyl windows are so expensive is that they are very efficient and durable. I have a feeling that the whole supply and demand rule comes into play here.

As far as the cheapest, I don't know. What I do know is that in the world of home improvements you generally get what you pay for. This is true with laminate flooring, appliances, and most certainly doors and windows. I would check out Sears and also a distrubitor for a well known company like Jeld-Wen and see just how much more they are.

Good luck and keep the drafts out up there!

I am often surprised that the new windows I see most often in the Seattle area do not tilt in for easy cleaning. If yo uare going to spend the money on double hung vinyl windows, look for that feature that makes it very easy to clean the outside of the windows without a ladder.

Get several estimates. Windows are competitive and often companies will negotiate. The cheapest window from the cheapest contractor might not be your best deal. The seals in double pane windows are prone to leaking with time. When that happens, you're looking at about $150.00 or more to replace every window panel that leaks. Some windows are guaranteed for up to 10 years against seal failure.

I agree, Greg, getting a few different quotes is an excellent idea. This way, you can feel comfortable about the price you pay because you know you aren't getting ripped off. There are many different types of vinyl windows and each has a price of its own. Do a little research and find the type that works best for your needs.

Great answer Nate! I had vinyl window replacements in my home in southern California and I loved them. We did our homework - got quite a few bids from large & small contractors. They made a world of difference in our heating/cooling bills - but most importantly - the sound pollution went away.

We hired the second highest bidder - and never regretted it. We got quality that paid for itself over time.

Generally cheaper products won't last as long, or don't look as good as the more expensive options. That's not always the case, but it's generally a good rule to follow. If I were you, I wouldn't focus as much on the general price of the window, but instead, the difference between the price and the value it adds to your property. If the window you buy will add a lot of value, or if it will help you save money in other ways (heating, electricity, etc.) than it's worth it to spend a little bit more money.

Good to hear people saying vinyl windows are good! On other websites all I have seen are negative comments regarding using them. Currently waiting to have vinyl replacements installed here in Pasco, County Florida. Here we also have to have impact windows, due to Hurricanes. If not the code requires steel storm shutters to be installed. I think a lot of the negativity I read online comes from places that do not have wet, humid climates.

Odd, I've never heard anyone say anything bad about vinyl windows, but you're probably right it might depend on climate. In the Seattle area aluminum windows have condensation issues, and wood windows can have short lives if not maintained properly.

I believe they are so expensive simply because they are higher in quality than other kinds of windows. If you are looking to get them cheap I would call around to some suppliers and see if any will be having a deal or sale in the next while. If they aren't, you can still get a few different quotes to compare. http://www.superiorwindowsoftexas.com/windows/

You'll have to talk to a few of the companies in your area that deal with these windows to figure out which one is the cheapest. I think it will be important to find a company that does really good work. finding a good price can be nice, but it's nicer to have a guarantee that the work being done is good.

It's most likely the cost of the materials that are used to make vinyl windows. I also think they help out quite a bit with energy efficiency, so they're a little more valuable because of that. As far as where to find them at a good price, you might want to check with a window installation contractor. A lot of times they'll know where to get windows for a reasonable price. http://www.gilkey.com

I think it's because they have such good insulation qualities. The new house I just bought has them! Our heat bills have been pretty low lately. I didn't buy them personally though, so I don't know exactly how much they cost. https://www.hearthsidehomeexteriors.com/windows.html

I think that price will definitely depend on where you purchase them. Many stores offer them for different prices, and if you want to find the best price then it will probably be really great in your home. I've had wood windows for a while, and I've been wanting to try out some vinyl as well. I hope you are able to find them at a good price so you can get everything replaced that you need to. http://www.sandiegowindowtechinc.com/Aluminum-Windows-Lakesi…

I am considering vinyl windows. I have gotten quotes from an array of companies, and I have found a variety of price ranges. I think it depends on the size, quality, style etc. But I like them, and I think I will go with them.

Windows can be expensive. One thing that most homeowners lack is the knowledge of what type of windows they need. The other thing to watch out for (especially from the larger company's) is that they carry alot of overhead. There are several things we show to educate homeowners on what windows should actually cost. We found a great product with <a href="http://www.ecoselectwindows.com/Weathervane-Windows.html&quo… Windows</a>

Vinyl windows are superior to aluminum windows which decrease energy efficiency and increase condensation resulting in frost/moisture issues in the winter- especially in WA State. Contact your local utility provider or Energy Star to see if you may benefit from instant rebates or tax incentives for upgrading your windows. I was able to save $800 last year on a rental remodel. The installation company will often provide the appropriate forms and are knowledgeable about these benefits.

I live in Whittier, CA. I got like 7 estimates as I was on a super tight budget. I finally Decide On United Brand Windows... http://www.unitedvinylwindow.com I got 10 windows installed for $2895.00 plus tax of course.. Great windows... Couldn't believe the price but they are in. They even use double strength glass. Great job on the install too. They Manufacture their own windows right in Pico Rivera, CA. Don't normally rave about businesses but they did such a great job that I had to...

I found the highest quality vinyl windows for the price in Southern California was United Windows.. They were awesome. Home depot and lowes came in at approximately $16,000 for my 22 windows and 2 patio doors. United was $8300.00 installed. They are a factory. Oh and their windows qualified for the tax credit of $1500 which made the price even lower. I believe they are in Pico Rivera. http://www.unitedvinylwindow.com
