I am not a lawyer and I would strongly suggest you contact one. I did, however, make a deal with my municipality to obtain some land next to mine under the theory of adverse possession. It is my understanding that a claim of adverse possession requires that you use the property for a very long time, 20 years or so (at least that was what it was in New Jersey where I live) and the use has to be notorious, out in the open, and it has to go uncontested by the owner. In my case, the land had been used by the prior owners since 1920 and no one ever contested the use. The town probably still could have contested it, but we were able to work out a deal that made everyone happy and avoid litigation. Definitely check with a Florida attorney for all the nuances of the law before relying on it.... more
