Well, fix your credit for starters.

Getting out of bad credit is actually quite easy. Pay new bills AND RENT on time, and if you can't pay on time, communicate with your creditors and explain why, TRUTHFULLY and you will find many will work with you. Not all creditors are out to get you. Making up excuses, lying, or avoiding creditors will only make things exponentially worse because you will have damaged the relationship and they will show no flexibility or patience from that point forward. It only takes 7 years for all of your bad credit items to disappear... so let those collections ride if you can't pay them. However, if you continue to accumulate more debt or bad credit items you will never clear your credit history of the negatives.

Get one small credit card and use it, keep a small balance rotating but pay it off every few months. Do not pay it off each month or it won't show up on your credit as being used and paid.

Speaking from experience, a bankruptcy myself after my previous marriage. My credit score is now 810. It's only been about 10 years. With an 800+ score you you many doors open to you. 440 and they are slammed in your face. Good luck.
