How do you know your credit score is low? Have you talked to a lender or checked your score lately. If it's above 620 you should be able to buy or rent.

you are driving around, and you see a house with a FOR RENT sign on the lawn. And the Owner is cutting the grass. You engage him, telling him your situation, being open and honest. Tell him your credit is in the dumps and why.
You might be surprised.
If he kicks you off his lawn; you probably didn't want him for your landlord anyway.
