When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local authorities with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods. http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ https://www.crimereports.com/ http://www.homefair.com/ ... more

Refer your question to your attorney, depending on your situation you may want to start placing your things in storage elsewhere.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and opinions, even the one from PA as we are originally from WV. To clear up a few items I read, Joe: I never said we could not afford our mortgage and that is definitely not the case. We were just trying to take advantage of a lower interest rate.
I don't think we could qualify for any programs because we are not in trouble, never made any late payments and we are not trying to refinance $180K, only the $100K left on the mortgage. We do have one HELOC, but both combined are $150K; well below what we thought a fair market value would be on our house. After putting $100K in upgrades, inside as well as the outside I mentioned, that would mean my house is only worth $69K?? This was what was so upsetting to us. Thanks again everyone.
