As a parent with 3 kids in Hillsborough county in Tampa, I found that the the Catholic schools were our best choice for grades K-8. We had kids that transferred to both Tampa Catholic High School and to the Magnet Middleton High School that specialized in math and science. The magnet school was in what we would call a getto, but the teachers and school officials there were so much better and involved than the catholic high school. i had no concerns about safety and the staff went above and beyond to monitor the kids. The middle school also offers an Internation Baccaulareate program that i was impressed with how helpful the staff was when discussing options on the phone. The magnet schools will bus your kids and switch buses, so we opted to drop them off at 7am rather than put them on the bus at 5:45am.With sports practice after school we picked them up too. From what our friends said, you really had to be careful which public school you sent your kids too, some were much better than others. there is also a school choice program options listed on the hillsborough county school website.

You can plug in an address at the Hillsborough School website and determine the schools. There are also magnet and charter schools available for your family.

You can lookup the middle school assigned to your address:

If the school isn't great we also have Magnet and Charter Schools. Magnet Schools will bus your kid and they are usually in the 'hood. Charter Schools will not provide transportation and you MUST agree to Volunteer a certain number of hours, too. Usually there is such a high demand that you have to put your name in for the lottery to go to most of the Charter Schools.

Hope this helps.
