Dear PH,

Moving to Piedmont is your best bet. I have some friends that actually moved from their goregous house in the Claremont hills to Piedmont to enjoy the benefits of the Piedmont schooling system. They're now able to save an extreme amount of money in private schools.

The only way that you can really ensure your children can attend a Piedmont school would be to move to Piedmont.

Have you researched the elementary chools in Oakland? There are some really wonderful schools in Oakland. I have a son in an Oakland public school and I am very happy with where he is. I also have several friends with kids in different Oakland public elementary schools who are very happy with their school as well.

You may want to start doing so reasearch into schools in your area. You can ask friend and neighbors, or there area some online resources. If you don't already know about it the UCB Parent Network is a great resource to ask about schools Also you can check out Also as an Oakland resident you can apply for what is called and inter-district transfer if you find a school you like that is not in your immediate neighborhood. If you have more questions about this process, please feel free to contact me directly.

If ultimately you decide that Piedmont is still where you would like to have your child attend school, you will need to consider moving to the Piedmont school district.

Good luck to you on your school search. I know it can be a stressful time when determining the the best school for child and family.

If your residence is in Oakland, though you may be just over the border from Piedmont, your child will be assigned to an Oakland school. Areas like Piedmont and Albany, that have highly rated school districts, are very protective about the kids who attend them. Only those who actually live in those cities may send their kids to those schools.
How old are your kids? There may be alternatives. Oakland does have some well regarded magnet schools.

In order for your children to attend Piedmont schools you need to live in Piedmont.

While I understand your desire to enroll your child in the Piedmont school district, you'll have to check with that school district to see what the requirements are. Sometimes, if you work in that school district, but live outside the school district, schools will permit you to enroll in either school district. I doubt that's the case in Piedmont, but it's worth a call to the district. Don't try to pull any tricks.
