I would be cautious about choosing a school by test scores. Most of the desireable school district are desireable becuase they are high up in the testing scores that come out in the paper every year. My children went to the two highest test scored school dostricts in San Diego county at different times in their school years. I found that they are not always the best schools, they are the highest test taking schools. Try this site http://www.greatschools.net/ it will show you comments from parents about the schools their children are in. It will give you an insiders view. There are also some great private schools in San Diego County. The best middle school in San Diego is different for every child and every parent.
I have lots of clients request San Dieguito school district which services Encinita, and some southern parts of Carlsbad. Most of the newish homes in the La Costa Oaks subdivision have San Dieguito school district. Also, Del Mar. I also get requests for Poway.
My suggestion is to look at the school district sites and then, although API scores are one factor also review the school accountability report --which can be found on the websites, as well as the WASC accredidation comments-which is a really good tool. The school accountability; look for # teachers have emergency teaching credentials-the less the better. Look at the written scope of what the school is about. For college acceptance, remember it takes more than just good grades-so look at a schools programs. In addition look at how long the WASC accredidation is good for in years and what the comments were. As well with the recent filings of pink slips of teachers in San Diego..look at the current existing info in regards to the student/teacher ratio--if it already high, it may get higher this fall. Here are a few sites to help you get going. I wish you much luck. http://www.sandi.net ----SD Unified, scroll to "our schools" http://powayusd.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/--POWAY UNIFIED http://www.sduhsd.k12.ca.us/----San Dieguito Union School District http://www.dmusd.org/district/default.aspx---Del Mar Unified http://www.vcpusd.net/---Valley Center Unified
