Southwest Boston Suburb Schools (Dedham, Norwood, Braintree, Canton)

Asked by mwt137, Boston, MA Wed Jan 16, 2013

I have been searching for homes in the Boston area for a few months. I noticed that the homes southwest of Boston (e.g. Dedham, Norwood, Braintree, and Canton) are more affordable with my budget of $350k. However, I've heard conflicting statements about the school systems in these towns based on some blogs and school ratings. Which, if any, of these towns are considered to have good school systems?

My clients find these links very helpful:

Here's the school rankings for 2012's top 50:

And here's a chart where you can manipulate the criteria across the top to see where each town ranks based on that.

And here's a comprehensive list from 2011 showing Dedham and Norwood, and others so you can get an idea of where the towns rank.

The best way to answer your question is with http://www.schooldigger.com :)
Elementary schools in Massachusetts are better than the rest of the country accross the board but within the state and even within each town there are better schools and worse schools.. each neighborhood is different. I would visit the schools, interview the teachers/staff, and drive the local neighborhoods and ask the parents of the kids you see.

You may want to consider Milton if you're looking for a town with a good school system. Milton was voted #2 by Money magazine as best places to live in the country. One of the reasons being it's school system. The elementary schools offer a french immersion program from first grade. By the fourth grade the child is fluent. However the success of it's school system is largely based on the the involvement of the parents and the community. The town with Federal assistance renovated all of it's schools from elementary to high school within the last 10 years. I know and endorse Milton as a real estate agent and current resident having graduated 2 kids and having 2 still in.

Milton is in a similar price range. My daughter attended the Milton public schools from k-12. She is now an honor student at one of the best colleges in America. Many of her friends did as well as she did.

Each of these areas offer different programs at their schools. I would recommend calling different schools in each of those areas as well as going on different sites and checking out the reviews. There are also good schools in other areas closer to the city where you can still buy for affordable prices. Give me a call I have nieces and nephews in a lot of different schools and I may be able to give you more advice. Check out my site for more up to date listings in those areas. http://Www.realtyaplus.com/buy
