School Information

Asked by Hlkinser, Petersburg, VA Mon Jan 21, 2013

I'm looking for information on the schools in the Williamsburg area. We are currently located in an A school system in Fairfax County and I'm dreading the house hunt combined with schools. Are there any secular private schools within 30 minutes of Ft. Eustis?

I moved here from Northern Virginia as well (Falls Church). I completely understand how difficult it is to leave Fairfax County Schools! HRA is a great private school, but I encourage you to check out the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools...I think you will be very pleased with them! Please feel free to call or email me directly if you have any other specific school or move-related concerns. There are private schools within 30 minutes of Ft. Eustis. Please visit http://www.walsingham.org and http://www.hra.org to view school information.

Thank you for the responses so far. Please remember that secular means non-religious so Our Lady and Walsingham are absolutely not an option. I have not ruled out public schools but simply trying to cover all the bases.

In 2009 Our Lady of Mount Carmel school received the Commonwealth of Virginia designation as a Blue Ribbon School and just this year was voted Best School in the Hampton Roads area. Also there is Hampton Academy in Newport News which is a very highly rates school. Both are within 10 miles of Ft. Eustis. Also York County has a very highly rated school system. Also here is a link where you can look up the ratings of schools: http://www.greatschools.org/ .

I would think Walsingham Academy, although a great private school would not be on your list of "secular" private schools since it offers a Distinguished Catholic Christ-Centered Community For Academic Excellence.

Beginning with Public schools, it seems the Matoaka Elementary District, Hornsby Middle School and Jamestown HS has been a popular combination.

As mentioned below, Hampton Roads Academy is an option as is Walsingham.

Our children's experience within the JCC/Williamsburg School system was fortunately a positive experience.

I've had some clients who have moved their high school aged kids from Fairfax that had problems transferring AP classes into JCC public high schools, but other than that I can say my two children went through the public schools just fine, with AP and dual enrollment classes with Thomas Nelson Community college. My daughter graduated VT in the top 5 of her college and my son is a sophmore on the Dean's list at VT. They worked hard and were challenged at all school levels because we expected a lot from them and the schools.

You might want to consider Hampton Roads Academy, http://www.hra.org/default.aspx if you feel a private school is a necessity. Close to Ft Eustis, buses run from Williamsburg to HRA. I will tell you that our two sons attend Williamsburg/ James City public schools and we are extremely pleased. Why not visit the public schools and see what you think. Talk to other parents before you choose a private school.

Happy to assist if you aren't already working with an agent..

That should read "A plus school system" but the app didn't recognize the plus sign.

JCC school district is terrible, especially DJ Montague Elementary School. I would go either Hampton Roads Academy or look for magnet schools in the York County district. Stay far away from Williamsburg schools.
