Looking for best areas for children with special needs. My aunt has a 4 year old downs syndrome girl and is looking for an area with good schools.

My aunt has a 4 year old downs syndrome girl and is looking for an area with good schools for the little one. She will be relocating from NY. I am new to Middletown and I don't have children yet so I'm not familiar with the school system. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Laurie: I hope your aunt knows of the following sites:

http://www.downsyndromekidsinfo.com

http://www.dsacnj.org

http://www.spannj.org/START/find_support_groups.htm

These should be able to offer some good advice for her, as well as help her decide where to raise your cousin.

Best wishes to you and your whole family for a happy thanksgiving.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. Bernard, the links were useful especially since my aunt is in NY and is looking for resources in Monmouth County. Jason, the link you sent didn't work - I got an "oops" error and then I could only go back to the home page. I am going to try reaching out to some of the parent groups for advice. Thanks again, everyone. Happy Thanksgiving!

Laurie - Morris Union Jointure Commission http://www.mujc.org/ may offer what your aunt is looking for. This is located in Warren (Somerset County) - Not easy to get into, so definitely will want to contact them early to see what is involved. You're getting some great advice also from Bernard. Some great first steps. Then when you are ready to check out the rest of the community in Somerset Cty or neighboring communities, I have a ton of info for you and can help. Best to you, and have a great Thanksgiving! - Lynn
