Living/Buying in Oak Knoll (Redwood city) and entrance into North Star Academy?

Asked by Pc, San Francisco, CA Sat Oct 4, 2008

I'm perusing the Oak Knoll neighborhood for houses and like any prudent home buyer I'm looking at the rating of the schools in the area. Based on the geography, it looks like I may fall into the John Gill Elementary school district which only rates a 778. But I found that North Star Academy is also nearby.

I think I read on a prior question that this school is a magnet school and there is an entrance exam and some other criteria for getting it. I'm curious as to the other main requirements for entrance. Specifically, I'm also wondering how close you have to live in the area to be allowed to go to this school (is it open to all of San Mateo since it's a magnet school?).

TIA.

Hi PC, yes it is a magnet school. Please visit the website for more info, plase see enclosed. http://northstaracademy.ca.campusgrid.net/home

If you would like, I would be more than happy to send you listings in the Oak Knoll neighborhood whenever they become available. FYI, just because you move into the area doesn't always get you into a certain school, so make sure to do your own due diligence.

Best of luck,

I recently interviewed Jan Christensen, the Superintendant of Redwood City Schools earlier in the year on my monthly real estate podcast. While it may not answer directly the Northstar question, it will give you a good insight into what's being done to improve RC schools, and how to best interpret things like API scores.... check it out at http://tinyurl.com/4xc4zj

Hello,
I think the first thing to do is to check out the schools website. There you will find information regarding admission requirements, the schools mission statement and even what supplies the students are expected to have available by grade.
I also suggest you check out GreatSchools.net for parent reviews. The review page for Northstar Academy is http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/browse_school/ca/6933.
