Joan, under what criteria is New Rochelle a wonderful school district? The rating in westchester magazine is abyssmal and 20% of high school students have limited english proficiency. With 1 out of 5 students unable to speak and write english proficiently, I can't imagine the elementary and middle schools are good.

Hello Natasha- I have lived in the New Rochelle area now for 25 years and though we are not suppose to comment on the schools personally we can guide you to sources of information. I can generally state that Westchester County is known for it's school. Now- abiding by the laws - go to schoolmatters.com and I would suggest as Beth suggested to you ( an excellent realtor by the way!) to visit the schools-ask the questions- see for yourself. If you need any further information or sites or help call me at my office, Debbie Fugazy Houlihan Lawrence in New Rochelle 914-636-6700 -email-DFugazy@HoulihanLawrence.com

Forget this 8 out of 10... rating scale.. Be diligent and go to the school.. Dont count on friends,neighbors.. do the homework you should do!! The Larchmont Woods section of New Rochelle is lovely as well as many other neighborhoods there.. It is not always about "Larchmont".. If you cant afford to be in Larchmont.. and have to (lets say) settle in The Woods....( which is almost embarrassing to write).. You will be most happy with the District, I am sure.. And for those who question the english proficiency... Uh... HELLO New Rochelle is diverse and has english as a second Language, Special Education, etc.. for out of district kids,.. possibly the kids from Larchmont!~!! They also have MORE prorgrams... sports related, Theatre related, HONORS programs, Ivy League Grads, etc...... They are different systems... Larchmont elementary cant offer what ALL of the NR schools offer...sorry.. But it is the truth! Lovely place to live.. but check out large schools anywhere... Oh..PS Larchmont elementary become Mamaroneck for Middle & High....

Joan, i'm actually really curious although its unlikely we'll be purchasing in the next couple of years. I'll send you an email offline but don't spend any real time on my inquiry as I don't want to waste anyone's time since I'm not a real client/customer right now. When we were in the market in lower westchester i looked into all the school districts in areas we liked and my research led me to conclude that New Rochelle schools were subpar. I'd definitely be interested in any data supporting other conclusions as the housing there tends cheaper than Larchmont/Scarsdale houses near the borders.

Dear Natasha, here's a US Dept of Ed site http://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/ ALSO, on my website, under Community Profiles, you can get a comprehensive School Report as well. BUT, ultimately, you must setup a visit with the principal to see and feel first hand how any school is..Feel free to contact me under no obligations. Enjoy!

Absolutely pay attention to the number of special needs kids that are at the school. Is it a magnet type, what are the classroom sizes (Central in Larchmont rarely goes over 21 kids per teacher), has the recent budget cut back? The recent negotiations have been cutting staff and services while bumping up administrative salaries across Westchester (and home owner taxes, go figure why homeowners aren't up in arms with this typical government cash grab). Ultimately, you can't really compare the two school systems. Look at the tax mill rate in each city.
