In general, the schools one attends in Fairfax County are determined by the street address where one lives. This has a considerable effect on prices of residential real estate, since some school districts are more highly sought after by buyers of homes than others.

That being said, there are also public secondary schools in Fairfax County to which admission is by competetive examination, or special interest. By examination, I refer to the Thomas Jefferson High School of Science. There are also special interest programs for art and engineering.
