Best schools in Chattanooga area?

Asked by Dan, Pensacola, FL Wed Dec 19, 2012

Hello all,
I would appreciate any advice on what parts of Chattanooga have the best public schools. Right now we are focused on elementary school, but if there are areas with great elementary, middle and high schools we would love to know about them. Our first inclination is toward Signal Mountain. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much everyone. By Lookout Mountain, are you referring to TN or GA? Are the middle and high schools there good as well?

It appears that most of these people have the right idea. Lookout Mountain is going to be about the best option for public schools, but I highly recommend Hickory Valley Christian School for a private elementary education. My wife is the P.E. teacher there and I have nothing but great things to say about the school and its staff.

Lookout Mountain Elementary is excellent and in a family community. Small classes and supportive parents.

Hi, Dan,
As a mother of 3 small kids - all elementary school age - and the wife of a cop who was a School Resource Officer in Chattanooga's public high schools and middle schools for several years, I believe I can shed some light on your question. And, no, I'm not a real estate agent. ;-)

Tammi and Lori both have very good points and I would agree with them both…to a certain extent. My husband was a huge advocate of Hamilton County's public schools...until he went to work for them. Now he happily agrees with our decision to have them in private, parochial school. There are good schools within the system - Lookout Mtn. Elementary and the new schools on Signal Mtn. (there were some issues, but they have been mostly resolved) stand out first in my mind. I am not trying to say that the other schools are bad. All of them aren't. Obviously, the Resource Officers deal with the problems (in addition to teaching, mentoring, counseling, and the eight million other tasks they provide) so they tend to see the worst of the worst. And it does depend on staff - teachers, principals, administration, etc.. all make a world of difference. Look at those people over any online score. Good luck!

Dan, I just moved to Chattanooga from Chicago in August. I have two daughters one in middle school and one in elementary school and I believe it truly depends upon the teacher but from my research and knowledge of both the Florida school system, and Chattanooga I would tend to steer you towards Signal or Lookout Mountain. The elementary school in Soddy Daisy is good but the higher grades are not and the schools in Ooltewah seem to be in good standing but again you will need to be careful I personally was looking at the Westview Elementary school but in the end decided to go to a private Christian School. You can look on line at… or

Looks like Mr. Mason woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Fine, let's say hypothetically speaking that one was not a real estate agent and answering this question as a parent and LOCAL resident of Chattanooga, could someone please help me out?

Real estate agents are not allowed to comment on a variety of topics. The Fair Housing Act restricts the information that can be provided by a real estate agent.

Off Limit Topics Include:
• Crime Statistic (including questions about whether a neighborhood is good or bad or safe)
• Demographics
• Environmental Concerns
• Household Income
• Religion
• Schools (including questions about how good or bad the school is)

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a real estate agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.
