Here's your district:

And here's how your school stacks up:…

Try to find parent comments - that always helps - but teacher to student ratio is always a tell-tale and relate directly to the standardized test scores.

School scores provide an objective measure. Then I recommend that you look at the individual schools and pick the one that has the best feel within the score range that you want. Of the schools in Carlsbad Unified School District, Kelly Elementary has posted very high scores repeated for years. This past year I think it scored the highest is CUSD at around 937. This was followed by Pacific Rim at 913 and Aviara Oaks Elementary at about 900. In the Encinitas Union School District (which encompasses part of Carlsbad - basically south of La Costa Ave.), there are also a few: El Camino Creek scored around 932, Mission Estancia at 919, and La Costa Heights at 903. School scores do give a good idea about academic performance, and if you are looking for a strong elementary program, I would not go below 900. Of these six schools, there should be one that you like.

Not all of the schools are compact enough so that all the kids can walk to the school, so you need to look at location of homes vs. location of the school. You might find our "Homes By School Boundary Maps" to be of interest because they allow you to compare homes while simultaneously comparing schools and scores. You'll see a link to it at

I hope that helps. Call if you have questions.

Mission Estancia was just given the only Blue Ribbon in the County. In my opinion the south Carlsbad San Dieguito School District according to is now and has been the number one school district in the county.
The most reasonable area as far as price and school would be Calavera Hills. Rancho Carrillo is great but the High School is San Marcos.

It's important to remember Carlsbad city boundaries contain 4 different school districts in 3 geographic areas: Carlsbad, San Marcos, and San Dieguito/Encinitas. Based on school scores overall for elementary, middle, and high schools, I think the area of southeast Carlsbad(La Costa Valley) which is in the Encinitas(elementary and middle) and San Dieguito(high) school districts would probably be considered the best.

Here's a list based on the 2006 API scores of the highest scoring schools in San Diego county, and overall district averages. http://FileLibrary.MYAASite.Com/Content/12/12509/23987066.pdf

To live near the top performing El Camino Creek Elementary, you may find the older community of Rancho Ponderosa to be more affordable.
