"What is safe? No one has the answer"
Here's my answer: safe is safe [ sayf ]
not dangerous: unlikely to cause or result in harm, injury, or damage
not in danger: in a position or situation that offers protection, so that harm, damage, loss, or unwanted tampering is unlikely
unharmed or undamaged: in an unharmed, uninjured, or undamaged condition

Safe would be somewhere with low crime - low rapes low murders probably low burglary/mugging as well.. Safe would be somewhere with good schools and low gang activity. Safe would be somewhere that you don't have to sleep with a gun under your pillow, gun in your pocket when walking the dog at night, worrying about your wife at home alone at night while you work. Just saying.

Hi Dor,

As agents we cannot comment on the safe portion of your post, as that may put us in violation of fair housing laws. There are a number of sites that offer crime statistics by zip codes.

What is your definition of friendly? A community with social activities? Group interests?

When it comes to condos, there are apartment-style condos, villas and townhomes. Some have covered parking (carport or garage) and others just assigned, uncovered parking spaces. You'll find condos built in the 1960's, 70's, 80's, etc. The older ones are often in need of some sort of updating, would you be ok with that or not? Some communities have lower monthly maintenance fees but no real amenities, others offer more amenities at a somewhat higher monthly cost. Do you have pets? Some condo communities allow pets, some do not. Those that do generally have restrictions on the number of pets and weight.

What about location? Is it important to be close to downtown Sarasota, or perhaps the beaches, golf courses, biking trails, shopping, or public transportation?

You'll find Sarasota offers condos in a wide range of prices, from under $75,000 to over $1 million, and there are quite a few quite lovely communities. Which ones would meet your specific needs would really require more information from you as to likes, dislikes, requirements, etc.

I've listed and sold a number of condos over the years and am quite familiar with many of the more popular condo communities in our area. If you need more assistance, please feel free to contact me via my web site below.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local authorities with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

There are a couple reasons i would stay away from that area for Seniors, yes one is higher crime and two is the traffic can get a little crazy in the down town area. There are many great 55plus neighborhoods in Sarasota that are a little more off the beaten path sort of say.

Licensed real estate agents are not allowed to answer questions about crime or how safe a neighborhood is. We get questions like this frequently and can only suggest that you view the stats on the county sheriff's websites. For Sarasota County it's http://www.sarasotasheriff.org/

You can also get lots of information by stopping and talking to the neighbors. Drive through a neighborhood in the early evening and on weekends. Neighbors can tell you far more about a neighborhood than a real estate agent is permitted to.

David Barr is technically correct, but for practical purposes Willowbrook is in the same general location as Palmer Ranch. In the interest of providing readers with accurate information, Deer Creek and Silver Oak have guarded gate access, and most of The Hamptons is ungated, as is The Isles.
