You misunderstand the purpose of a closing cost credit. It is an amount that is offered to be credited against closing expenses that are actually incurred. Your expenses were covered. Yes?

Any amount credited that remains after the closing costs are paid is not available for you to put in your pocket.

Recently, a renter met a man in the parking lot in front of my office. The scam artist pretended to be affiliated with my broker, and the renter gave him a deposit check. It was only after the renter didn't get the keys that he came back and came into the office to talk to the receptionist. By then his check and the scam artist were long gone.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
