The advice your getting may be well intended but it's lousy advice. Going to Wells Fargo, or any of the big banks (BoA, Citi, Suntrust etc) is going to be an utter waste of your time.
If you have any access to a Credit Union this would be your best bet given your low credit scores. Second best would be to contact either a small local bank or a mortgage Broker who has access to many dozens of lenders and who can review your financials and then place you with the best lender who can work with you.
You may want to find an experience Buyer Broker who works with first time buyers first. I've attached a link below to educate you on what you should be looking for.
