there IS A LOT OF FRUSTRATION when looking for an apartment -- and there are times I look at a place and wonder what might make the homeowner think the apartment is worth that much . Honestly mortgages are not that bad these days and landlords can get a better quality of renter by cutting the rent back a bit - and being more gracious to pet owners - I mean if you are willing to rent to a family with children who are harder to manage than a cat or dog than what is the issue? I also saw a comment here that essentially says if you can't afford the rent in a decent neighborhood than you should settle for a lesser neighborhood -and that is sad, because there are many fine people who might not have work that pays well but who works very hard and may not be able ot hold two jobs and they are to be penalized? I lived in a nice place for a long time and the rent was below market - but the homwowner wanted quality people more than profit. Now they are retiring and selling the home and I wish them well. I wish more landlords would think more carefully about these issues. ... more

We have lived in Randall Manor for about 5 years and are happy here. Two kids under 12. Walker Park and Silver Lake Park are both relatively close, Snug Harbor is beautiful. It is a relatively affordable area, diverse. Not perfect (what area is) but overall a great neighborhood to consider. It differs street to street so really look around. Re: schools, PS 45 also serves the Randall Manor area. There is also PS 65 which is a lottery school on St. Paul's Ave. but an excellent elementary school to look into. Our youngest attends it. Middle school is a challenge all over this island. Visit PS 61 if you can. The magnet program and arts programs are good. Our oldest would have attended but was accepted into a specialized middle school. Best to do your research and visit at different times of day as someone else suggested. Good luck! ... more

Actually we real estate people tell landlords they are asking to much and they want more. We tell them what the market is they want what they think the apt is worth. Same goes for their homes they all want to overprice them. Do you really think realtors want to work with owners who overprice apt's and homes were we can't rent or sell them for months? We just want to rent or sell them get paid and move on. We don't want to spend months on a rental or house and never get paid for our work. ... more

Until my kids can afford to get their own place it's my responsibly as a parent to subsidize their lifestyle. I have three of them and two still live with me even though they are both college grads. As Judge Judy says if you cant afford kids don't have them and expect me to subsidize their lifestyle. Keep your kids home until they can afford to be on their own. ... more

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Heartland Village is a very quite area which is great for kids. I live there and I have 3 kids and its perffect for them. It is a long commute to the city about an hour and a half. Also, unless you drive and depending on where you live not so close to shopping either. I have a 10 block walk to any stores which is ok for me but not my teenage son. When all said and done its worth it for the comfort of the kids. ... more
