Everyone here posted some great resources but a couple things to keep in mind:

1. By law the security deposit cannot be more than twice the rent (ie if rent is $2,000/month then the deposit cannot exceed $4,000).

2. If you do prepay the rent, you have to do a minimum of 6 months worth, not any less.

Both of these rules are per CA law.

Hope this helps!

You can find apartment listings online try craigslist or an agent could help by searching the MLS. Most landlords want to see good credit but beign upfront about your credit can save you time and frustration. Highlighting other positive factors like your salary (in most cases they want to see 3X the rent amount), length of time at work, and rental history. If you have the funds to pay for a higher deposit, then include this information as well.

Any local agent should be able to help--or consider being upfront with the potential landlord as to why your credit is not so great; possibly offer a larger security deposit, possibly pre-pay some of the rent, offer letters of reference, etc.

A large deposit may work.
