re-locating from NYC.!

Asked by red_doghubb, Berkeley, CA Mon Aug 19, 2013

Single woman, quiet, non smoker, with a small senior dog, income of $81,000 . agents/owners want an applicant to view before leasing but with the crunch of giving my 2 weeks notice, getting rid of my apt etc. I won't be able to fly out for a view. I also realize they want to rent ASAP. i'm fixing my start date as last week of Sept but need to secure housing to "secure" that start date! Having a VERY difficult time getting something this early. Can anyone offer advice or have a sunny, 1bed apt for rent, up to $2600 in Berkeley or SF proper?I’d be glad to pay pro-rata last two weeks of Sept if this works out.

Welcome to the Bay Area! I relocated from NY long, long ago. You might try air bnb for a short term rental until you can settle here a bit and get to know neighborhoods.

There are lots of places listed for anywhere from 1 night to several weeks.

And, yes, rents have gone up and the competition is fierce. With an income of $81K a year, you might be able to buy something for a comparable monthly payment.

Good luck, Jodi Selene

For Berkeley, you can also try,,, or in SF try, or; and I have had clients who have been successful finding a regular rental on craigslist and just asking the landlord if they would rent short term.
Good luck.

If you can't get an apartment to rent, but will consider short term rentals to give you an opportunity to look around when you get here, try AirBnB

Here's a link to what you can find in Berkeley

This may be your best bet so that you aren't stressed out more than you are already when you are relocating.
