Hope you found your place! I have a small townhouse with three apartments. I always post my units for rent in local coffee shops and laundromats while I am a few weeks out. I also put ads on Craigslist and Trulia. If you see my apartments this way it's no fee. That being said once I get about two weeks out with a unit not rented I will list it with an agent. Bed Stuy is a transitional neighborhood right now some landlords rent direct others are going through brokers. I have found that units that are in higher demand are often listed with brokers.

If you don't want to work with an agent, check local print media for by owner rentals, always verify ownership before exchanging any money; word of mouth, etc.
