Hi Debbie, Rentals in that price range are not too hard to come by in any part of San Antonio. It really depends on the size, age, and condition of the property, and of course the location.
The following link will give you the crime statistics for the city. http://www.sanantonio.gov/sapd/indexcrime.asp.
That along with your commuting distances and proximity to shopping, schools, etc should give you a big part of the information you need to make an educated decision about where you want to live. My website (below) has links to maps, schools, and mls information. Good Luck!
I would be dubious of anyone saying any area is "safer" than another as crime occurs everywhere, it just varies by type. The best way to learn about it is to do your homework. One or two people's opinion can be very misleading. It also depends on what kind of crime you are talking about too. As Realtors it is dangerous to make comments on this topic as it may potential violate Fair Housing laws and be discriminatory.
Put in any zip code you want to check out and it will give you information on
* Income by Household (average income for those zip codes)
* Education (levels of education in the those zip codes)
* Crime Risk (about crime in those zip codes)
* Weather Risk (about the weather on those zip codes)
* Additional Statistics for any zip codes you would like to know about
It's a great tool and it will help you decide where is the best place to rent a home.
Hope this helps,
Gina M. Garcia, REALTOR

Give me a call and I can send you a list of the homes to choose from.
