What constitutes the Tenderloin district? Are their definite borders? Is California St between Larkin and Hyde a relatively safe area?

San Francisco districts are defined by the SF MLS so there are definite borders. The Tenderloin as defined by SFAR is bounded by Market, McAlllister, Polk, Geary and Mason. California between Hyde and Larkin is the boundary for Nob Hill and the Downtown districts. Trader Joe’s has recently opened a wonderful new store in that block on the south side of California, the Downtown District. It is a safe area. The cable car runs up and down California all the way from Van Ness to Market Street near the Embarcadero right past the block in question. Lots of tourists and residents in the area.

Tenderloin district borders are Polk, McAllister, Market, Mason, and O'Farrell (not including O'Farrell itself).

"Safe area" is a relative term. Try spending some time there during different hours to get a better feel for the neighborhood.

The Tenderloin is technically a very small neighborhood. However, it's effects reach outside of the neighborhood. Check out this webpage, it's very informative. In fact, there are some very nice treasures inside the tenderloin.

See below for another definition of the borders of the tenderloin.

I agree with Oggi Kashi. A "safe area" is relative. I also recommend spending time in the neighborhood to see if it's a good fit.

Good luck!

The boundaries of the tenderloin are as follows:

O'Farrell on the north
Mason on the east
McAllister to the south
Polk to the west

California Street is a long way from the tenderloin. It's actually Nob Hill and you see plenty of people out walking to the bars and restaurants in the area. Although you always want to be careful in any city, this is not an area I would be worried about.

That said, it starts getting sketchy fairly quickly as you head south.
