Safe Areas in Oakland?

Asked by Chelsea, Martinez, CA Sat Mar 16, 2013

I'm looking to rent a 2 bedroom condo/ townhouse in a safe area of Oakland. I'm not sure where to look to find an area that is nice but also reasonably priced. Craigslist doesn't seem like the best place to start... any suggestions?

Please check out various websites that Carl has provided.

What may not suit you will suit others based on their preferred lifestyles. Do you want to walk around for exercise? Or want to walk to your favorite restaurants? Go to Farmer's Market? Then the area around Lake Merritt may be more to your liking. Check it out at night, and get the vibe.

Good luck.

This is a tough question. Everyone has different opinions on what they consider safe. In addition, Realtors are bound by certain Codes of Ethics that do not allow us to intentionally steer clients to a particular area, or away from a particular area.

I would start with looking at the OPD website for crime incidents Also the crimspotting website is a great place to look as well:

Talk with friends and co-workers as well. They can be a great resource to start looking in areas you are considering. Also trying to visit areas in Oakland is also a great idea. There are a lot of little pocket areas that are not always widely known that have very active community groups and are great places to live. (Diamond, Laurel, Maxwell Park, Temescal, etc.)

Craigslist along with sites such as this one (Trulia), Zillow, etc to post rentals. Some rentals are posted by owners, some are posted by Realtors who are listing the rental for the landlord, and others are being posted by rental management companies.

I actually have a lease listing coming up in the Glenview District. It is a two bedroom as well. If you would like more information, let me know.

Hope that helps!

Overall, Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, for crime statistics, go to the following sites:
