We've had problems like this with some of our listings being hijacked, pictures and all, and advertised for rent for way lower than would be realistic. Sometimes it's properties that are for rent, but we've even had for-sale listings hijacked as part of a rental scam.

My advice to anyone looking for a rental is two-fold:

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Research the address in a browser to see if it comes up elsewhere and/or drive by the property to see if there's a sign out front that matches the contact information in the ad. If it doesn't match, please call the real number to inform them of the scam so an alert like this one can be sent out and sites carrying the ad can be notified of the scam in order to get it removed, hopefully before someone falls for the scam and mails a check.

2. Only put the money in the hand of the landlord or property manager in person after seeing the property in person. If you're instructed to send a check in exchange for the key being mailed to you, this is a scam.

Basically, if your antennas go up, don't do it.
