I wrote to the ad and got the same response. $1350 for a $2500 apartment. Scammer is writing as
markjohnson_0138@yahoo.com

AKA George Mooney
AKA Mark Johnson.

I asked Trulia to remove it. Their response:

This definitely looks suspicious. I did look up owners in that building. Many are owned by Outrigger Hotels
but I did not see Mr. Mooney's name among owners. There is a slight chance that he would be an owner if the purchase was recent.. Public records are not super up to date. I would be very careful about sending
monies prior to signing the lease.

Here is the original ad:
http://hotpads.com/rentals/255-Beach-Walk-Honolulu-HI-96815-…

The wording was taken from a legitimate ad
http://www.hawaiihome.biz/idx/?idx-q-PropertyTypes=&idx-…

Looks like a scam. The owner is not George Mooney. No apartment number is in the ad, and the rent looks too low. 1 BRs in this building for $200/night or around $2500/month.

See my previous post:
http://www.trulia.com/voices/Property_QandA/is_this_price_fo…

The latest gimmick is that the scammers are looking up property owners then making email addresses that are similar.

I would be extremely cautious in regards to this lease. Please tell me you did not find this rental on Craig's list and the owner is out of town. This has been one of the most active scams sweeping the nation and has made the local paper. When renting you can charge first and last month's rent or rent and a security deposit up to one month's rent.

As Kimo mentioned you can go to http://www.honolulupropertytax.com/Main/Home.aspx but if property was recently purchased it will not show up and if it is in the name of a trust or LLC you will not be able to locate unless you know the name of trust or LLC. You can contact the Association of the complex and see if they can help.

I also inquired about this property. Several emails later to and fro to Mr Mooney, once I declined to commit unless I physically saw the apartment, all communication stopped.

It so hard to know which ones are legitimate.
