Another option might be using a short term option, such as Extended Stay America. The benefit is that it is furnished, and it can help while you get established. Best of luck!

Hi MV,

A lot of people on here will sell you a dream or give you just a bit of the picture of Hollywood Red Carpets and daily celebrity sightings. Just because you don't have a credit score doesn't mean you cannot get a place. Above all else, you will need a plan, a lot of patience and a few satchels of American currency.

But BEWARE!!! L.A. is full IMMACULATE PROPERTIES with bad management/landlords as well as A TON of crappy /houses/areas, and "seemingly" high-end units that are dumps (bad management, rampant petty crimes, NO PARKING, etc.) that you will run into once you live here for a while. Expect to get the runaround, fill out dozens of rental applications, spend a few dollars on gas driving around (DEFINITELY BUY A CAR

I am a property manager as well as an agent and I review rental applications daily. Here are a few tips to help get your application approved even if you don't have a credit score. I suggest writing a cover letter with an introduction about who you are, why you love the rental you are applying for, and an explanation why you are moving to Los Angeles. You should get a letter of recommendation from your current landlord to show your rental record of paying on time in the UK.

Many times people no credit will have a local boss, friend, or family member act as their guarantor. It makes me feel more comfortable because I make sure the guarantor has ample income and good credit. You can always offer to pay a double security deposit or pay a few additional months of rent in advance as well.

If you are going to be working for a company, they could rent for you and you reimburse them.
You need to have someone here to co-sign on the lease agreement . Can you pay 6 months in advance and show work contract? You need to be creative when you come from overseas, I wish you luck , and advise you to open a bank account here asap and to also apply for a credit card and start spending and making payments, so you will have a credit score in the near future.

Sometimes paying cash up front can help but it will depend on the landlord. Just keep checking with the potential landlords. You might be asked to pay more in security. I have known landlords that accept overseas credit scores/reports. It also helps if you can get employment verification.

Thanks for answering.
Unfortunately any guarantor would be in the UK, so would all be uk based credit scores.

Would it help if you pay a certain amount of months upfront?

Without credit you will probably have to have a guarantor sign the lease. There is a lot of competition in the rental market here and landlords are extremely picky about credit.
