And you will not run into risky rental situations like this. Odds are that this is a scam. If you got yourself an agent, you wouldn't have to wonder.

It is a scam. This happens all the time on Craig's List. Usually, they will take an existing rental that is advertised somewhere else and put it on Craig's List for a reduced price.

If you see something like this on Craig's List, there are three places you can look to see if it is a scam. In our valley, most rentals are advertised in our Multiple Listing Service (MLS) or two different property management companies that do not participate in the MLS.

First check to see if it is on the MLS, go to to search the MLS

The go to and see if it is on their site

Then go to and see if it is on their site

If you see it advertised at a normal price anywhere on the above sites, then it is a scam on Craig's List

Hi Tammy,
Whenever you see any properties like this give your agent a call. They will almost always be a scam, but your agent should be able to clarify it for you. They can also send you active properties that are currently for sale in your price range. This way you don't waste your time on the scams.

Tammy, This listing fits the "if it looks too good be true it probably isn't" Homes rent for between $1.00 - $1.50 per square foot based on location and size. The smaller home the higher per sq. ft. and the larger the home the less per sq. ft. Gated Homes in Valencia rent at a higher fee while older home in Canyon Country may be available for less money.

My specialty is the listing and resale of homes in Valencia, Stevenson Ranch and other incredible areas of the Santa Clarita Valley. Let's discuss the benefits and possibility of your buying a home now or in the near future. You have the benefit of my 32 years of local knowledge at work for your and your family!

This home is for sale at $472,000 with me. Some idiot is trying to scam money so I contacted Truila and the ad was taken down. It was also posted on craigslist plus this happens everyday.

If you need any other help finding a home, please contact me.

When they sound too good to be true, they often are.

Hi Tammy, That sounds way to low for a home just over 3000 sqft. Many renters have moved into homes that the homeowner no longer intends to keep due to financial difficulties, I am not saying this is the situation with this property, however go with your gut instinct if it sounds to good to be true... I had a client rent a home only to discover a few months into the contract the homeowner stopped paying their mortgage and the home was being foreclosed upon. I did a blog on this for anyone wanting to know their tenant rights if faced with this situation.
