Respectfully, I disagree with Ms. Baer. Unfortunately, property management companies just usually represent only the properties they manage for the owners. There is little sharing of commissions between companies, so a property mangement company will tell you only about the ones they deal with or other management companies they have agreements with. There really is no sharing database as there is in housing sales. Also, a lot of property owners manage their own properties. This leaves it up to the renter to do all of the footwork. Different owners have different rules on whom they accept. Tenants are not hard to find in this market, so you might try working owners who manage their own properties. They often are more accepting of problems. Most will want a credit and criminal history. A lot depends on what the felony was. I would level with everyone you call and go from there. Good luck.

Hello-

If you are looking at renting from a large multi-family company such as Archstone, Amli or Camden then you will likely be disqualified with a felony. Your best bet would be to contact a private renter who is willing to make an exception for you. Be prepared to pay a hefty deposit as well. Good luck and if you need anything please reach out to us.

If you are willing to complete a rental application and back ground check, pay First/Last months rent and a security deposit there are many landlords out there willing to work with you. Honesty is the best policy, just be upfront and forthright in your application and explanation of this past felony. Don't let it haunt you. Are you gainfully employed? If so, Have your employer write a reference on your behalf.
You need to work with a property management company who can help you secure good rental housing.
Check on line ads daily. The rental market is tight right now. More rental properties will open up after the school year ends in May. That typically when most folks move. Good luck!!
