I contacted someone about an apartment and it sounds promising but they are asking that I "need to send us scan copy of your id or reference before we

Asked by Andre, Jersey City, NJ Thu Mar 28, 2013

The insured cost of shipping is also about £105 pounds. More so, after viewing the apartment, if you do not like it, you will also be responsible for sending us back our keys and documents" Is this a scam?

Hello Andre,

How are you? I hope you're doing well. The NYS Attorney General advises renter never to provide brokers with your identification prior to meeting in person. Here's a link to an article from last week about rental scams http://therealdeal.com/blog/2012/03/21/ag-issues-alert-again… Hope this is helpful to you.

Looking forward,

Pretty fishy there...I'd think twice before jumping in. No agent, broker, etc. would ask you to pay upfront for showing an apartment.

If you need help in searching an apartment, you can check out my website and I will be glad to help you.

Hi Andre. I'm not sure I get this. The post says you're in Jersey and asking about rentals in NY. You make a reference in British pounds, which means nothing here. You also didn't finish your sentence so..."need to send...before we"....what?

Bottom line, NEVER pay up front. I was going to say this smells like a scam but now it just stinks! Tread carefully and contact a broker in the area you are looking to move into. Good luck.

Never give anything upfront without having viewed any apartments. However, you do need to have paperwork and deposits ready for when you decide which apartment best suits you after viewing units. Not before.
You can call me to further discuss your real estate needs and help you find a home. You can also check out our website.

* let me guess - the rent sounds too good to be true (really low)?

* they can't meet you to show you the apartment?

* they are out of the area, out of state, out of the country??

* they will send you the keys once you wire money?

All the above are warning signs this is a scam!
