There are some good answers below. Did you check out Trulia's crime map?

Hi Leah,

Besides finding out the crime statistics, a really good way to feel out a neighborhood is to go there and feel it out in person. Go there and walk around on a weekend and weekday - and evening. Ask the neighbors questions that are out, they usually love to talk. Go shopping there (there's a lot!) or visit a local restaurant.

You can also sign up for crime alerts on the City of San Diego Police Dept. website for a particular address too. That way you'll know what types of crimes have been committed in the a couple of different areas, and you can choose which types of crimes to be notified about.

Hope this helps!

Hi Leah,
You have recieved great advice by checking with the local police or sheriff web site for local crime statistics. My Question is it financially safe to rent rather than buy. you can purchase a property at a cost at or less than rent. Check everything out.You can purchase in many communities including but not limited to Mira Mesa, La Mesa, Rancho San Diego, and more.

Mira Mesa is a well established community and centrally located with easy access to all parts of the county.
The best way is to check some websites and check in with the local police sub-station Address: 13396 Salmon River Road San Diego, CA 92129
Phone: (858) 538-8000
The websites that I like are:
http://mapping.arjis.org/ and http://www.crimemapping.com/map.aspx?aid=137a7b29-7112-471f-…
It is good as well to check http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov for sex offenders.

Leah,

I recommend visiting the site http://www.sandiego.gov/police/services/statistics/index.shtml and also driving at night and day in the area. There is only one way to know if you are going to like it, and that is to look for yourself because different folks have different opinions.

Hi Leah,

Check out this site for a discussion on crime stats over in the Mira Mesa area.

http://www.liveclassy.com/explore/explorecrime.php?n=62

I would encourage you to head into the local police precinct and gather more information from there and more importantly, go around to the neighborhood you are thinking about moving to and go talk to some of the neighbors...that should help you get a good feel. There are plenty of nice parts of Mira Mesa and it is in a conveniently located area of San Diego (easy access to freeways, center point between inland/coast, lots of close by shopping, et.al)

Mira Mesa is a relatively affordable part of San Diego and there certainly are some deals to be had out there.

Hi Leah,

We agree with another agent's advice on this which is to go there and walk around as each person's experience and criteria for safety are different.

Also, the San Diego PD has it's own page with information at http://www.sandiego.gov/police/services/statistics/index.shtml

Best of luck to you,
