Now is not soon enough due to low inventory, and depends what price range you prefer. To stay in the competition of a given home, being preapproved with a mortgage company will better position you.

I am currently seeing rental properties that are not available till June. My suggestion is to review the market now and start viewing and applying for properties next month. If you would like assistance or have more questions feel free to contact me. The rental market is tough right now but interest rates for home loans are low. Great deals are showing up daily.

I would start your search about thirty days prior to your move date. With a 3 percent vacancy rate across the city, it would be hard to find an owner that is willing to hold a property vacant until then.

You should start looking now, to be sure to get the apartment you want, before you run out of time. That way you have time to consider.

Start in May, any earlier will be redundant. Scout out the area you want to live in, get a pre approval from a lender and then strike while the iron is hot. Escrow should be no more than 30 days, your search shouldn't take too long. My sources tell me that Bank of America will be releasing about 300 homes on to the market in that time frame here in Portland.
Good luck!
