Does anyone know of a rental property that allows well-behaved and fixed pit bulls in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, or any surrounding areas?

Asked by Nnims, Santa Rosa, CA Wed Jun 6, 2012

We thought we had a rental arranged, then they wouldn't accept us because of our pit bull. I am looking into getting insurance on him, but we really just need a place. Anywhere slightly above a shack will do. We are nearly desperate. We have to leave our current rental, which is a house in the mountains. The drive is treacherous and our landlords only worsen the situation. They repeatedly enter our house when we are gone. They actually showed the property without any notice! Twice in one day. We are from out of state, where it doesn't matter the breed of your dog. We had no idea there were such breed restrictions in this area! Please, someone, help us!

We don't have any family or know anyone around here with enough equity for a home loan, unfortunately. Any takers? :D

Many insurance companies for landlords have language prohibiting "agressive breeds" in a rental property because of increased liability. I suggest that you consider ways to purchase rather than rent. Talk to relatives and friends about them taking advantage of the tax benefits of having rental property. There are also "lease options to buy" that you can look into if you have some cash for a downpayment. Best, Terry Bell, CPS RE Santa Rosa

You have an uphill climb with that issue. The rental market is very competitive. The fact that you have fixed your animal helps. Call some of the local property management companies like Dee Dee rental in Santa Rosa or Kolodge Property management in Sebastapol. Tell them your situation and see if they have options that might suit your needs. Do not bother looking at any place unless you know the owner/landlord/property manager would consider renting to you with your dog.
