No. It's not safe.

It's not that Trulia isn't safe. But the process you're describing--whether it's on Trulia or Craigslist or your local newspaper--is not safe.

Never, ever, ever send money to someone you don't know. Never. Many such offers are scams. You send the money and you never get the keys.

Besides, logically: What do you need the keys sent to you? What are you going to do with keys to a Kentucky property when you're in Michigan? Seriously? You only need them once you're there. And if someone actually sent you the keys (which they usually don't), how the heck would you know whether the keys are actually for the property in Kentucky?

But more to the point, deal with a reputable intermediary. Or drive down to Louisville and take a look at the property and meet the landlord. Oh, you say the landlord is out of town? Perhaps overseas? Absolute scam.

Protect yourself. Rent the right way.

Hope that helps.

If a property mgmt firm is working with you should have a pay pal site and keys need to be arranged. If you are renting direct from owner then you have to work it out with them. If no Realtor is involved I would check out a few things like is the owner current on mtg ? if not could be headed for a foreclosure. Also make sure they are the owner of record there are a lot of scams going around . Have you ever thought about a lease to own program ? if so contact me off line at ronnie@1change.com

Have you spoken to the Rental Agent? Landlord? Owner? This is the first place to start, as you can ask many questions & get a feel for their knowledge of the property. Go further by looking up the property field card which shows the current property owner or by calling the local town hall to double check the correct owner before sending ANY money.
