Multiple Dwelling Law?

Asked by Noamofan, New York, NY Thu Nov 1, 2012

I understand that it is illegal in NYC to sublet an apt for a period shorter than a month. Is that true? Is that for all areas of the city and all types of buildings?

Due to Hurricane Sandy, I have read that the city was considering issuing a temporary emergency waiver of the law. You might search the newspapers and the realdeal online as well as contacting the city and/or the mayor’s office at 311 or nyc.gov ( There is another number you can call from Vegas listed on nyc.gov) as to if it is now temporarily allowed

Hi Noam,

In 2010, the Governor signed legislation to clarify the definitions of permanent and transient housing, to clearly define transient where a guest stays for 29 days or less.

When it comes to any necessary legal advice/information, it's really in your best interest to consult with an attorney; don't simply rely solely on online information...
