Why not convert into another bedroom? Leave the car on the street. The conversion with ductless AC will cost around $6.5K’ish. With another bedroom you just increased the value around $7K-maybe $10K.
Good luck with the inspections.

Great idea if it's quality work. 6-10k average for a 2 car garage. We've done over a dozen re-habs and turned a carport into a garage and it sure helps sell the home. Surprisingly not expensive if the room is there and you have some good contractors. The benefits far out weigh the cost of building it and it really appeals to a much larger buyer pool. I must say it even though you may know already,,, double check to make sure if any permits are needed as I did a conversion in Scottsdale and we ran into quite a tussle from the city. The old saying it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission doesn't work for Scottsdale at all....

Approximate $6,500.00 includes stem wall (cement) for framing, insulation in walls, exterior siding, (stucco extra) drywall with joints taped, run electrical power for garage motor, 1 car garage with motor 1key pad 1remote no window $500.00 more for 2 car garage with 2 remotes and windows. If your carport has popcorn ceiling and want it removed will be extra cost. Call me directly for more details Galdino Lopez 623 206-7111 not lic. contractor

That is a really detailed estimate for the conversion of the carport. It is interesting that adding a window is extra money, but it does make sense. I would fork out for the window in my garage because it is nice to have natural light in an area like that. Does this estimate include the cost of an electric garage door?

It will be hard to say without knowing more and seeing it. One car? 2 car? what is there now? Could be anywhere between $5k to 15K.

The cost of the carport conversion depends mostly on the size of the carport (one-car, three-car), among other things. This page explains why it can cost under $2000 in some cases: http://azproplus.com/az/services/planning-a-carport-conversion.php

Why would it be more expensive? I saw a review on Angie's List that showed the final price of a more complex job (which was still way under the numbers I see in these other replies). The issue there was that they had to replace some of the overhead beams because of termites. That guy (Dave) lived just north of Scottsdale, Arizona. His review is featured here: http://azproplus.com/prolcc.php

I think that it definitely depends on the garage that you are looking for. There are quite a few things that will alter the cost, from who builds it to the cost of your garage door. I would just be sure that you get good prices on everything that goes into the cost. It will also depend on if you need to make it a bit bigger, so I would just find a contractor and see if you can get a quote so that you can start planning out what needs to be done! http://www.garage-door-store.com

I'm not sure how much it would be to turn a carport into a garage but we just replaced our garage door. It was cheaper than I thought. It really needed to be replaced, it was very dented and chipped. http://www.auroraoverheaddoor.ca/en/newmarket.html

It can be quite costly to wall-in a carport. If your carport already has a wall, then it can be easier. Still, walls are expensive. They are doubly-so if you try to insulate them. The door also factors in.

Depends on several factors. Is it a one to two car garage? Will it be insulated, drywalled, stucco or wood siding, what other items may need to be adjusted to bring the carport to code, i.e. electrical, plumbing, windows, doors, etc. More information would be need to provide a approximation of price.

If you take the dimensions to Home Depot or Lowes, they will give you a quote on materials.
Then go to Angies list and get a quote on the labor.

It depends on the original state of the carport. It could range in the area of expensive. I can see the benefits of having a garage. More security and a place to do projects away from the elements and prying eyes.

I haven't done mine for years so I couldn't give you a straight answer. I do remember, it wasn't cheap! Plus, you will have to spend money of garage door repairs throughout the years!

There are several factors to consider to obtain a cost. As a former owner of a design/build company, I can tell that no one can give you an accurate estimate without actually seeing it in person. Hope this helps, good luck !

Just don't reply then, it's not helpful. These questions are for a ballpark $2000 vs $10000 vs $25000, not any precise estimate. You can also discuss what factors determine the cost.

There is a lot to take into consideration. Call me to discuss more in depth. You definitely need to get a least 3 quotes from general contractors. Best of luck!

Turning a carport into a garage is a great idea. Buyer love a garage and are often lukewarm when looking at a home with a carport. Plus, a garage can add 5-10K to the value of your home, so the cost to convert it can often help you break even on that investment. If you do the work yourself, make sure you do it properly though, bad construction can make it look bad, and negate the value. Ask around (or ask me!) for a good contractor who will do it right the first time.

This will definitely depend upon who you call. I would think you could get it done on the low side of $3000 depending upon how much work they will need to do. It will go up from there.

Hello,

Before you run to the Home Depot to buy the materials, there are a few things that you need to consider first - I am a realtor not a contractor. I can offer you a referral of a good builder. Get a price from a garage door installation company to install the garage door because it requires expertise and special knowledge for the garage door to operate properly.

From years of Real Estate experience, I would tell you, if you have a a contractor do the work turnkey for you, expect to pay from $3000 to $8,000. This all depends on what area of the country you are in and the construction of your house.
Please allow us to assist you with your real estate needs. We have many years of experience to help guide you through the many steps.

Kindest Regards,
