Who to call in to estimate renovation project?

Asked by E, Chicago, IL Wed Aug 13, 2008

Most of the homes we're seeing in our home search need remodeling - from updating/adding kitchens/baths to full-scale renovation (really old homes that haven't been updated in years, need everything). Who is the right person to bring in to see if any of these improvements make sense? We'd like to get 1) ideas about what could be done to a house and 2) a ballpark estimate. Also, do you pay this person for their time? I know most professionals would probably look at a house or two, but we're considering about 4 completely different homes with different levels of renovation needs. Should we pay someone an hourly fee for this?

About us:
We already have a great realtor who is helping us with our search, but I've also gotten different advice from designers I know. Looking to get some additional opinions. Also, we are planning to live in the house, not flip it, and can live in our current home during renovations.

You are very wise to get an estimate for remodeling before you buy a home. Many people dont do enough research before buying a fixer upper. Paying an expert to look at the home and give you ideas on what to change and the cost is the best way to go. You can try contacting architects to help with this. Some Contractors may be interested too..but many will not be interested because they are busy with construction projects. You can also try interior decorators and home inspectors..some of them may have the right skill sets. There are some online remodeling cost calculators that can give you a rough cost estimate like http://www.remodelestimates.com
