How much value will we add by expanding our driveway from a one car driveway to a two car driveway?

Asked by Semantics, 11720 Sun Dec 19, 2010

We live in Centereach, NY and are redoing our driveway which currently is only one-car and is broken up. We are expanding to a two-car and adding brick detail. Would this add value to our home in the current market?

It's hard to say exactly if you'd get a full return. But like everyone said, if it makes your life easier go for it. The good thing is it will be more attractive to potential buyers. It may set your home apart from others!

Expand if your driveway only if it will make living in the house more enjoyable to you...keep in mind that oftentimes renovations don't get a full monetary return; when ready to sell, what matters most are comps--recently sold similar properties in the immediate area--that data will determine a value....Be mindful of any possible required permits, check with your local building's department beforehand.

Probably no extra value, but it will make your life easier each day.

It will make your home more marketable. You can't expect to recoup all of your costs but how much you recoup may depend on other homes in your neighborhood and what the expectations of buyers looking in your area are.
