Should be 20 years, but I always tell clients it depends on many things including the weather/location. They can look great but really aren't cost efficient in my opinion.

A shake roof should last a minimum of 20 years, but it depends on the location of the home. If there is heavy density of trees, the constant shadow can cause mold. Same with high humidity. We've all seen the the charming cottages with green roofs.
Shakes are charming, but far more expensive than asphalt. Some of the newer asphalt shingles have more texture and design for a more upscale look.

Wow! We replaced ours finally after having pots in the living room! Shake roofs do look cutsy, but their insulation power is zero! When we finally got the composition roof up with plywood underneath, couldn't believe how much more airtight the place is. I think our roof was on about 20 yrs, toooo long, and all the neighbors slowly also converted to compo. There is an issue with fire insurance as well. Best, Terry Bell, Realtor, Santa Rosa, CA
