Converting a two family to a one family???

Asked by Miamama05, Ravena, NY Wed Mar 10, 2010

I am considering buying a 2 family home, but I would want to convert it to a single family. I am not extremely concerned with resale value since Iplan to make this my families home for a long time. What I was wondering is what would be required to do this. Do I need permission from the city to change the home? And about how expensive would it be to alter the home? It is located in Ravena, NY Thanks so much for any input.

I had clients in Albany a couple years back that occupied both units of a 2 family...they mainly used the back staircase to go between unit whick made it feel like a 2 story home...When we put it up for sale we marketed it as both a single family and a 2 family which got much more interest...This may work for you as well as you never know how your plans may chnage down the road. If you need any further assistance with this property or any others, do not hesitate to give me a call.

If you do convert, it is best that you check beforehand with your local building's departments regarding any permits that may be needed. As far as the cost, it depends on exactly what you would like to do. Why not contact a few licensed contractors and ask for estimates, then choose the one that best suits your needs-- you agent can also advise and possibly offer a few recommendations.
