Basement finishing/remodeling

Asked by Malita215, Philadelphia, PA Mon Dec 16, 2013

I'm a new homeowner and I was looking for information on basement finishing. Does any know of a good contractor? Has anyone had a basement finished? If so, do you mind sharing how big your basement remodel was and range of the cost?!

I need to find someone who can help finish my basement. It seems like this is a project that has been dragging on. I have been putting it off, but I would love to have some help with it.

My parents recently had their basement finished, and they are very happy with it. It was kind of wasted space until they did that, and now they are really enjoying it. It came out great, and they got exactly what they wanted, even stuff they weren't sure would work.

I agree that having an unfinished basement is not the best use of the space. My sister had an unfinished basement and wouldn't let her kids play down there. Now the kids kind of have a space of their own and love it.

I am a professional basement finishing contractor in Colorado Springs. I recently wrote a blog post that details our last 10 projects and gives a breakdown of total cost, size, cost per square foot and a brief list of specifications. I hope this helps you!

I didn't have them finish my basement, but Four Seasons Waterproofing out of Delaware County (which primarily finishes basements, etc.) did a wonderful job with moisture/mold remediation in my house last year at a price far lower than their nearest competitor. The amount it'll cost to finish your basement is going to depend on how big the space is, if there are any existing problems that need to be fixed, and whether or not you want to go for all high-end finishes/materials - or just the basics to get the job done. They do free home estimates at Four Seasons though, so it can't hurt to ask! ( is their URL if you'd like to give them a shout.)

Notably, many/most other basement finishing contractors nearby also offer free in-home estimates for the job as well, so get a few different quotes before deciding!

Good luck!

Prior to making any committed renovation initiatives with basements, owners should first focus their attention on the suitability of the existing environment to be converted to a living space. Many basements have moisture issues that can cause great damage and inconvenience. It's my recommendation to identify the potential for or presence of dampness and resolve the issue prior to getting further involved.

Good luck,
