Good for kids=safe?
Sure. But the vacuum / bubble / Stepford aspect can be a harmful formative influence.
Drug use is prevalent among teens and preteens as there is nothing for children to do here.
Add to that the absentee parenting / nanny-will-do-all-the-work mentality and you end up with kids that
feel entitled and neglected.

Speaks volumes that most young adults leave immediately after high school.

Mill Valley does have a small town feel and so do all of the towns in Marin County. Greenbrae north has the most beautiful weather, no fog most of the time. Mill Valley, Sausalito has the most fog in the summer. I like to let my clients know this especially if they like to entertain in the summer and are coming from a warmer climate.

It really doesn't get much better than Mill Valley for raising a family. There are five elementary schools, which means fewer kids per school - and they've all been recently upgraded - they're beautiful - as well as a great Middle School and an unbelievable public High School. I have three daughters and they have been through Old Mill elementary (we walked there every day down a set of stairs with huge redwoods all around - magical) - two are at the middle school now and the oldest just started at the High School - really unbelievable public education happening here. Very small town feel with a square in the center of town, great library, shops, restaurants. Easy commute to the city - twenty minutes to Muir Beach, 45 minutes to SFO or Oakland airport and three hours to Tahoe. Tons of trails on Mount Tam to hike, bike, run. Life is good here.

The 2 largest towns in Marin are Novato & San Rafael at about 50, 000, and all of the others are 8,000 - 15, 000 or less. Schools are good, there is a small town feel & most towns have a downtown area.

Everyone loves Mill Valley for its small town feel. It is a real meeting place that everyone feels comfortable to come down and listen to music in the square, while sipping a cappuccino from one of the 4 cafes on the square, or sit and read a book. The public schools are excellent, so many families from San Francisco choose to move here, once they have children, to avoid the nightmare lottery of school selection in the city. They save around $80,000 a year for two children's education. The adored and beautiful library sits alongside a creek with tall redwood trees, and there is so much local musical talent living in Mill Valley, you can simply walk to the Sweetwater or Throckmorton Theatre and be entertained all week long. The healthy food stores or Mill Valley market and two Whole Foods stores are also great meeting places for the locals. There are many parks to choose from for the children, dog parks, soccer fields, tennis courts, gorgeous bike paths, and hiking to die for. The boutiques rival Union Street and Fillmore Street in the City for creative and dynamic designs. And a whole plethora of home decorating stores are on all the little streets. The commute to San Francisco is also an easy one.
