Realtors (I'm not one) have legal and ethical constraints that prevent them from giving you a straight-up answer to your question.

I officed in Lake View for many years and had no hesitation about my 20-something daughter moving thre a year and a half ago from DePaul. I'd recommend Lake View without hesitation if you're otherwise comfortable with the area.

EveryBlock.com and other sites are going to make it appear that there's a lot of crime in the area. There is, but nothing that should concern you if you're savvy about how you conduct yourself. You won't find much of the violent street crime that plagues some other parts of Chicago.

The best suggestions in other comments are, simply, to visit the specific area you're itnerested in at various times of the day / days of the week and determine your comfort level.

I always suggest to my buyer clients three things....
a) drive through the neighborhood during the week, the weekend, daytime and night time to get a feeling
if this area works for you
b) if you have children visit the schools in person
c) if you are worried about safety, check with the local police department or go to websites like Chicagocrime.org or everyblock.com

And with having said all that, always remember neighborhoods change over the years, schools change
there is or is no new construction, people moving in and out of neighborhoods etc.

If you need help I would be delighted to e-mail you all available properties in the Lakeview neighborhood
in your price range, your type of home (condo?) so that you can then make a choice of which ones you would like to look at .... where you thinking about a condo overlooking Lake Michigan?

The best source for this information is to be in touch with the local police department or county sheriff's department. they have access to the most accurate and current information and are generally very willing to be helpful.

Good luck

Dear Meghan,

I would suggest any of the following to you to try to get a sense of the crime stats of any neighborhood compared to any other.

If you are considering a specific address, then you can call 311 (the City of Chicago's information services) and give them the address. They can tell you what if any police activity has been reported on that address.

You can also usually get general area crime statistics from the neighborhood Chamber of Commerce.

You can get general crime statistics from a newer online community "EveryBlock" which can be found at http://www.everyblock.com. You can then search for Chicago and crime statistics.

You can visit the City of Chicago Police Department website and search for "Index Crime Statistics" or you can try the department's main website at https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath.

Let me know if you need any assistance in locating a property to purchase. Good luck.
