The primary MLS for Ridgewood, NJ, and all of Bergen County is the New Jersey MLS so go to the public site at http://www.njmls.com
to see what's out there and you'll find that you most probably have to be at $2,200 and above per month. If you can accept 1 bath, you can get a rental in Ridgewood for less. I'm a member of both New Jersey MLS and Garden State MLS and while there is some overlap from the Garden State MLS, it's not where Bergen County listings reside primarily.
In Bergen County, the tenant pays the rental fee which is 1 month's rent. This is something that comes as a surprise to many people because in other areas the landlord pays the fee so I wanted to bring this up to be sure you're informed. New Jersey allows no more than 1.5 month's rent as a security amount so expect this as well.
Another point to consider is whether or not utilities are included and we all know that the big factor is heat. You can call the local utility, Public Service Electric & Gas, at 800-436-7734 and ask them what a monthly budget figure would be for the apartment you're considering. If the heat isn't gas or electric, ask about the oil bill or get the name of the oil company and then call them for a monthly budget figure. The agent you use use should do that for you but I've heard people tell me that this hasn't happened.
Unfortunately not all listing agents post pictures of rentals - lazy agents! But, you can use the NJMLS mapping to get a "bird's eye view" of the location which helps a bit. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or post them here on Trulia where everyone can help you.
