Is this a safe area for a single woman to live alone?

Asked by Seshanna, Philadelphia, PA Fri Feb 1, 2013

When I was a kid I was warned that streets higher than 1oth or so weren't very safe, and now that I've moved back to the city a lot has changed. Where I used to live in Kensington's gone completely under, and now I need to live closer to work in Pennsport. These apartments look really nice, and I've heard that the whole area's been under renovation, but since I don't know anyone there I thought I'd ask if people generally felt safe in the area. I generally just work to death but live alone, and don't get off work until late, so I want to make sure I'm going somewhere that I won't be walking into trouble. Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

Seshanna,

I think that it's more than the neighborhood that plays into being safe. Working with women over the years I have found that their attitudes really come into play when it comes to their feeling safe. As a case in point, working with my grand daughter to find a home was made easier because she was willing to look in changing neighborhoods where a big part of her feeling safe came from having some street smarts and/or just making common sense every day decisions.

That being said, there are neighborhoods that are safer than others and I would be more than happy to assist you in finding a new home. I look forward to hearing from you.

the art museum area is safe if you live on a major street in a high rise and/or where there is foot traffic like pennsylvania ave.

Speaking as another SWLA, whatever the neighborhood, consider the immediate surroundings of any choice. Is there a safe place to park your car. ,Is there a community of neighbors who look out for each other?, Are you close to public transportation if you need it? Are nearby businesses good neighbors? Do they provide security for their customers and employees? Happy home hunting.

The woman that currently owns the unit at 1201 Fitzwater is very comfortable there and never has had safety concerns. The Hawthorne is also a very community like building. The unit is IDEAL for a single lady - GORGEOUS!
