Hi Ted,

There is some great feedback here, but one thing I didn’t see anyone reference was insurance. There is typically an increase in this cost, as having a pool creates additional liability for you and the insurance company.

We have a pool and do not have any additional tax or fee. 10,000 gallon "play pools" are common in Phoenix. With our hot summers, we think it is a necessity.

There is no tax or fee for having a pool that I am aware of in the states that I list and sell real estate. I have never heard of any in other states, either.

It wouldn't be surprising if states or local municipalities added or increased taxes on our water bills to fund conservation efforts or programs. I assume such tax would only be reflected on total usage. In some areas, water for external use may be on a well, while the inside water is on public sources.

At some point there will probably be a water fee. Clean fresh water is a limited resource that many communities are facing. At some point there will probably be a penalty for using water to enhance a yard or have a pool.

Just the cost of putting the pool in and then of course a pool guy :) Once a week for about $20 per week:) Otherwise, there are no fees. Interesting question, are there fees imposed in other parts of the country??? Of course, property taxes will be imposed on the pool also...

A pool needs a permit to be built, but once built, as far as I know, there are no additional taxes or fees. Although, I'm not 100% sure how local governments use the knowledge of a pool in assessing your property taxes. As far as I can tell, they don't use a pool in establishing your property taxes, and rather use lot size and property size, but perhaps a pool does come a little into the equation.

You might check to see if there's any mention of pools from the assessor's office.

For sure, there is not an explicit pool tax.
